Understanding: Reflect on your childhood experiences. What moments do you remember that might have contributed to your current feelings of low self-esteem?

Dialogue: Imagine a conversation with your younger self. What would you say? Offer words of comfort, understanding, and validation.

The Gestalt Chair Technique

Set Up Two Chairs facing each other:

In one chair, sit as your adult self. In the other, imagine your child self.

Engage in Dialogue:

Alternate sitting in each chair, embodying your adult self and your child self. As the adult, listen and respond to your child self. How does that little boy or girl feel? What do they need to hear to feel better about themselves and the situation? Offer empathy, understanding, and validation. This can be profound in help you understanding and healing old wounds.

Emotional Release:

Allow yourself to express and release emotions that arise. This can be a profound experience, often leading to significant emotional healing.

Offer Comfort and Protection:

Give your inner child what it didn’t receive in the past. Comfort, assurance, and protection are vital. Be the comforting parent, carer, peer, or friend that they didn’t have.


Now you are free from the emotional hold of the past, you can start to change the narrative in your mind. Specifically, notice how you talk to yourself, always remember the inner child within you who needs to be spoken to with kindness and understanding. Speak to yourself like this.

Recognize and celebrate your small victories. Each achievement, no matter how minor it seems, builds your sense of self-worth.
